Coverage guide

What travel insurance covers.

The usual benefits in plain English, plus what to check before you pick a plan.

Check plans

Benefits fall into three groups: your health, your trip and your belongings. Optional extras sit on top. The limits and rules depend on the plan and the insurer, so the policy documents always have the final word.

Health

What happens if you get sick or hurt far from home.
Emergency medical Pays hospital, doctor and ambulance bills if you get sick or hurt on the trip.
Look for  Whether the plan pays first or after your own insurance, and the per person limit.
Emergency dental Covers urgent dental work, like a broken tooth or sudden pain, while you are away.
Look for  This limit is usually smaller than the main medical limit.
Emergency evacuation Covers transport to a suitable hospital, or home when you need to go. Medical flights can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Look for  A high evacuation limit, especially for remote places and cruises.
24 hour assistance A phone line that helps you find care, arrange transport and sort out problems, any hour of the day.
Look for  The number in your policy documents. Save it in your phone before you leave.

Trip

What happens when the plans you paid for fall apart.
Trip cancellation Reimburses prepaid, non-refundable costs if you cancel for a covered reason, like illness, injury or severe weather.
Look for  The list of covered reasons, and that every prepaid cost is insured.
Trip interruption If a covered reason cuts your trip short, it pays for the unused part and the extra cost of getting home.
Look for  The interruption limit, which is often a percentage of your trip cost.
Travel delay Helps with meals, a hotel room and local transport once a delay passes a set number of hours.
Look for  How many hours it takes to start, and the daily limit.
Missed connection Helps cover the extra cost of catching up when a covered delay makes you miss a connection.
Look for  How long a delay has to be before the benefit applies.

Belongings

What happens when your bags or your things go missing.
Lost, stolen or damaged baggage Reimburses your bags and what is inside, up to the plan's limit.
Look for  The cap on each item, and lower limits on jewelry and electronics.
Baggage delay Pays for essentials like clothes and toiletries while your bag catches up with you.
Look for  How many hours it takes to start, and the total limit.
Optional extras

Upgrades worth knowing about.

Some extras cost more and some are only offered on certain plans. Several have a short buying window, so decide early.

Cancel For Any Reason Lets you cancel for a reason that is not on the plan's list, even a change of heart. It usually reimburses 50 to 75 percent of prepaid, non-refundable costs. Look for  Add it within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment.
Pre-existing condition waiver Can cover a flare-up of a medical condition you already have, when the plan offers it and you qualify. Look for  Buy within 14 to 21 days of your first deposit and insure the full trip cost.
Cancel for work reasons Covers a wider set of job related cancellations than a standard plan does. Look for  Not every plan offers it, so check before you buy.
Rental car damage Covers damage to a rental car. Your credit card or auto policy may already cover part of it. Look for  Check those first, then decide if you need the extra.
Adventure and sports Extends coverage to activities some plans leave out, like scuba diving or skiing. Look for  The plan's list of covered activities, matched to your itinerary.

Reasons plans commonly cover for cancelling

Your plan's own list is the one that counts.

Illness, injury or death of you, a travel companion or a family member Severe weather that stops your travel A fire, flood or other damage to your home A natural disaster at your destination Jury duty or a court summons A layoff or job loss, when the plan lists it Military orders A carrier that cancels or goes on strike

Exclusions Every plan lists what it will not pay for. Read that page first, not last.
Limits Benefits have caps, and some have a cap on each item. Match them to what you would actually lose.
Timing The most valuable upgrades have a short window after your first trip payment. Do not wait.
